In Atomen tritt eine Hyperfeinstruktur aufgrund der Energie des kernmagnetischen Dipolmoments in dem von den Elektronen erzeugten Magnetfeld und der Energie des nuklearen elektrischen Quadrupolmoments im elektrischen Feldgradienten aufgrund der Ladungsverteilung innerhalb des Atoms auf. Die molekulare Hyperfeinstruktur wird in der Regel von diesen beiden Wirkungen beherrscht, schließt aber auch die Energie ein, die mit der Wechselwirkung zwischen den magnetischen Momenten verbunden ist, die mit verschiedenen magnetischen Kernen in einem Molekül verbunden sind, sowie zwischen den magnetischen Kernmomenten und dem durch die Rotation erzeugten Magnetfeld Das Molekül.
