Hyperventilation
Hyperventilation tritt auf, wenn die Rate und die Menge der Alveolar-Belüftung von Kohlendioxid die körpereigene Produktion von Kohlendioxid übersteigt. Hyperventilation kann freiwillig oder unfreiwillig sein. Wenn die Alveolar-Belüftung übermäßig ist, wird mehr Kohlendioxid aus dem Blutstrom entfernt, als der Körper produzieren kann. Dies führt dazu, dass die Konzentration von Kohlendioxid im Blutstrom sinkt und einen Zustand erzeugt, der als Hypokapnie bekannt ist. Der Körper versucht normalerweise, diesen metabolisch zu kompensieren. Wenn überschüssige Belüftung nicht metabolisch kompensiert werden kann, wird es zu einem Anstieg des Blut-pH-Wertes führen. Im Extremfall kann es zu karpfenförmigen Krämpfen führen.
