Hypnotische oder soporific Drogen sind eine Klasse von psychoaktiven Medikamenten, deren primäre Funktion ist, Schlaf zu induzieren und bei der Behandlung von Schlaflosigkeit oder chirurgischen Anästhesie verwendet werden. Diese Gruppe bezieht sich auf eine sehr ähnliche Gruppe von Drogen genannt Sedativa. Während der Begriff Beruhigungsmittel Drogen beschreibt, die dazu dienen, sich zu beruhigen oder zu lindern, beschreibt der Begriff Hypnotikum im Allgemeinen Medikamente, deren Hauptzweck darin besteht, den Schlaf zu initiieren, zu erhalten oder zu verlängern. Weil diese beiden Funktionen häufig überlappen und weil Drogen in dieser Klasse in der Regel dosisabhängige Effekte erzeugen, werden sie oft kollektiv als sedativ-hypnotische Medikamente bezeichnet. Hypnotika sind regelmäßig für Schlaflosigkeit und andere Schlafstörungen verschrieben, wobei über 95% der Schlaflosigkeitspatienten in einigen Ländern Hypnotika vorgeschrieben sind. Viele hypnotische Medikamente sind gewohnheitsbildend und aufgrund einer großen Anzahl von Faktoren, von denen bekannt ist, dass sie das menschliche Schlafmuster stören, kann ein Arzt stattdessen Veränderungen in der Umwelt vor und während des Schlafes, besserer Schlafhygiene und der Vermeidung von Koffein oder anderen anregenden empfehlen Substanzen vor der Verschreibung von Medikamenten für den Schlaf.
