Die Stadt von Imphal (/ ɪmpəl /, Imphal.ogg (Hilfe · Info)) ist die Hauptstadt des indischen Bundesstaates Manipur. Die Ruinen des Palastes von Kangla befinden sich im Stadtzentrum, umgeben von einem Wassergraben. Kangla Fort war die Heimat der paramilitärischen Assam Rifles bis November 2004, als es in den Staat Manipur von Premierminister Manmohan Singh übertragen wurde. Der Polo Ground der Stadt ist der weltweit älteste überlebende Polo-Boden der Welt. In der Nähe des Polo Ground ist das Manipur State Museum mit einer Sammlung von Artefakten und Bildern, die die Geschichte der Stadt darstellen. Ima Keithel (Muttermarkt) bei Khwairamband Bazar ist der einzige Markt der Welt mit all seinen Ständen, die von Frauen geführt werden. 1944 waren die Schlachten von Imphal und Kohima die Wendepunkte der Birma-Kampagne. Zum ersten Mal im Südostasiatischen Theater verloren die Japaner die Initiative an die Alliierten (die sie bis zum Ende des Krieges behalten haben). Am 18. Juni 1997 wurde der Imphal-Distrikt in Imphal Ost und Imphal West aufgeteilt.
