Monotropa uniflora
Monotropa uniflora, auch bekannt als die Gespenstpflanze, indische Pfeife oder Leichenpflanze, ist eine krautige mehrjährige Pflanze heimisch in gemäßigten Regionen Asiens, Nordamerikas und Nord-Südamerikas, aber mit großen Lücken zwischen den Gebieten. Es war früher in der Familie Monotropaceae klassifiziert, aber es wurde jetzt in die Ericaceae aufgenommen. Es ist allgemein selten oder selten im Vorkommen. Im Gegensatz zu den meisten Pflanzen ist es weiß und enthält kein Chlorophyll. Anstatt Energie aus Sonnenlicht zu erzeugen, ist es parasitär, genauer gesagt ein Myco-Heterotrophe. Seine Gastgeber sind bestimmte Pilze, die mit Bäumen katastrophal sind, was bedeutet, dass es letztlich seine Energie aus photosynthetischen Bäumen bekommt. Die komplexe Beziehung, die diese Pflanze auch wachsen lässt, macht die Ausbreitung schwierig. Die Pflanze ist manchmal ganz weiß, aber meist hat schwarze Flecken und eine blassrosa Färbung. Seltene Varianten können eine tiefrote Farbe haben. Die Stiele erreichen Höhen von 10-30 cm, bekleidet mit kleinen Skalenblättern 5-10 mm lang.
