Interstellar Medium
In der Astronomie ist das interstellare Medium die Sache, die im Raum zwischen den Sternsystemen in einer Galaxie existiert. Diese Angelegenheit umfasst Gas in ionischer, atomarer und molekularer Form, Staub und kosmischen Strahlen. Es füllt den interstellaren Raum und fügt sich sanft in den umliegenden intergalaktischen Raum ein. Die thermischen Drücke dieser Phasen sind in einem groben Gleichgewicht untereinander. Magnetfelder und turbulente Bewegungen liefern auch Druck im ISM und sind typischerweise dynamischer als der thermische Druck. In allen Phasen ist das interstellare Medium durch terrestrische Standards extrem dünn. In kühlen, dichten Regionen des ISM ist die Materie primär in molekularer Form und erreicht Zahldichten von 106 Molekülen pro cm3. In heißen, diffusen Bereichen des ISM wird Materie primär ionisiert und die Dichte kann so niedrig wie 10-4 Ionen pro cm3 sein.
