LGICs are classified into three superfamilies which lack evolutionary relationship: Cys-loop receptors, Ionotropic glutamate receptors and ATP-gated channels. LGICs can be contrasted with metabotropic receptors, voltage-gated ion channels, and stretch-activated ion channels.
