Protein-Isoform
Eine Protein-Isoform ist eine von mehreren verschiedenen Formen des gleichen Proteins. Verschiedene Formen eines Proteins können aus sehr eng verwandten Gen-Duplikaten hergestellt werden - als "dasselbe Protein" oder "ein Protein" macht keinen Sinn für hochdivergierte Paralogs, die aus einem einzigen vorangegangenen Gen entstanden sind, das vor Milliarden von Jahren dupliziert und anschließend stark voneinander abweicht Sequenz, Struktur und Funktionalität - oder kann aus demselben Gen durch alternatives Spleißen entstehen. In älterer Literatur kann man auch auf die Verwendung des Begriffs Isoform stoßen, um Allele des gleichen Gens zu beschreiben, aber derzeit beziehen sich die Begriffe hauptsächlich auf paralogische und alternativ gespleißte Proteine, nicht auf Allele. Die Entdeckung von Isoformen könnte die geringe Anzahl von Protein-codierenden Regionen-Genen erklären, die durch das menschliche Genomprojekt aufgedeckt wurden: verschiedene Proteine, die von demselben Gen codiert wurden, könnten die Vielfalt des Proteoms erhöhen. Isoformen auf DNA-Ebene sind leicht durch cDNA-Transkript-Studien charakterisiert.
