Jacobitismus
Jacobitismus war die politische Bewegung in Großbritannien und Irland, um den römisch-katholischen Stuart-König James II. Von England und seine Erben zu den Thronen von England, Schottland und Irland wiederherzustellen. Die Bewegung hat ihren Namen von Jacobus, der latinisierten Form von James, und bezieht sich auf eine lange Reihe von jakobitischen Aufständen zwischen 1688 und 1746. Nach James II wurde im Jahre 1688 abgesetzt und ersetzt durch seine Tochter Mary II, die gemeinsam mit ihrem Mann und zuerst Cousin William III, die Stuarts lebten im Exil und versuchten gelegentlich, den Thron wiederzuerlangen. Die Hochburgen des Jakobitismus waren Teile der schottischen Hochebenen und Nord-Ost-Niederländer, Irland und Teile von Nord-England. Bedeutende Unterstützung gab es auch in Wales und Süd-West-England. Die Jakobiten glaubten, dass die parlamentarische Einmischung mit der monarchischen Nachfolge illegal sei. Katholiken hofften auch, dass die Stuarts die Wiederverwendung beenden würden. In Schottland verstrickte sich die jakobitische Sache in den letzten Schmerzen des Kriegerclansystems. Das Emblem der Jakobiten ist die Weiße Cockade. White Rose Day wird am 10. Juni gefeiert, der Jahrestag der Geburt des alten Pretenders im Jahre 1688.
