James II von England
James II und VII war König von England und Irland als James II und König von Schottland als James VII., Vom 6. Februar 1685 bis er in der glorreichen Revolution von 1688 abgesetzt wurde. Er war der letzte römisch-katholische Monarch, der über die Königreiche von England herrschte , Schottland und Irland. Der zweite überlebende Sohn von Karl I., stieg er den Thron auf den Tod seines Bruders, Karl II. Die Mitglieder der britischen politischen und religiösen Elite vermuteten ihn zunehmend als pro-französisch und prokatholisch und hatten Entwürfe, um ein absoluter Monarch zu werden. Als er einen katholischen Erben produzierte, explodierte die Spannung, und der führende Adlige forderte seinen protestantischen Schwiegersohn und Neffen Wilhelm III.
