Janus
In der antiken römischen Religion und dem Mythos ist Janus der Gott der Anfänge und Übergänge und damit der Tore, Türen, Passagen, Endungen und Zeit. Er ist in der Regel mit zwei Gesichtern dargestellt, da er in die Zukunft und in die Vergangenheit blickt. Die Römer nannten den Monat Januar in seiner Ehre. Janus leitete den Anfang und das Ende des Konflikts und damit Krieg und Frieden. Die Türen seines Tempels waren in Kriegszeiten offen und geschlossen, um den Frieden zu markieren. Als ein Gott der Übergänge hatte er Funktionen zur Geburt und zu Reisen und Austausch, und in seiner Assoziation mit Portunus, einem ähnlichen Hafen und Tor Gott, war er mit Reisen, Handel und Schifffahrt beschäftigt. Janus hatte ihm keinen Flamen oder Spezialisten, aber der König der heiligen Riten selbst führte seine Zeremonien aus. Janus hatte während des ganzen Jahres eine allgegenwärtige Präsenz in religiösen Zeremonien und wurde am Anfang eines jeden rituell angerufen, unabhängig von der Hauptgottheit, die bei einer bestimmten Gelegenheit geehrt wurde. Die alten Griechen hatten kein Äquivalent zu Janus, den die Römer als eigenständig beanspruchten.
