Kansas i / kænzəs / KAN-zəs ist ein US-Bundesstaat, der sich im Mittleren Westen der Vereinigten Staaten befindet. Es ist nach dem Kansa Native American Stamm benannt, der das Gebiet bewohnte. Der Name des Stammes heißt oft "Menschen des Winds" oder "Menschen des Südwinds", obwohl dies wohl nicht der ursprüngliche Sinn des Begriffs war. Einwohner von Kansas werden "Kansans" genannt. Seit Tausenden von Jahren, was ist jetzt Kansas war die Heimat zahlreicher und vielfältiger Native American Stämme. Stämme im östlichen Teil des Staates lebten gewöhnlich in Dörfern entlang der Flusstäler. Stämme im westlichen Teil des Staates waren halb nomadisch und jagten große Herden von Bison. Kansas wurde erstmals von den Amerikanern in den 1830er Jahren besiedelt, aber das Tempo der Siedlung beschleunigte sich in den 1850er Jahren, inmitten politischer Kriege über die Sklaverei. Als es offiziell zur Abwicklung durch die US-Regierung im Jahre 1854 eröffnet wurde, stürzten die abolitionistischen Frei-Statuten aus Neuengland und die Pro-Sklaverei-Siedler aus dem benachbarten Missouri auf das Territorium, um festzustellen, ob Kansas ein freier Staat oder ein Sklavenstaat werden würde.
