Kermesse, oder Kermis, oder kirmess, ist ein niederländischer Sprachbegriff, der aus "kerk" und "mis" stammt, der in englischer und französischer Sprache entlehnt wurde und ursprünglich die Masse an dem Jahrestag der Gründung einer Kirche und zu Ehren des Patrons sagte . Solche Feiern fanden regelmäßig in den Niederlanden und auch in Nordfrankreich statt und wurden von Schmecken, Tanzen und Sport aller Art begleitet.
