Killifisch
Ein killifish ist eine von verschiedenen oviparous cyprinodontiform Fisch. Insgesamt gibt es etwa 1270 verschiedene Arten von killifish, die größte Familie, die Rivulidae mit mehr als 320 Arten ist. Obwohl killifish manchmal als englisches Äquivalent zu Cyprinodontidae verwendet wird, haben einige Arten, die zu dieser Familie gehören, ihre eigenen gemeinsamen Namen, wie der Puppenfisch und der Mummichog. Der Name killifish stammt aus dem holländischen Wort "kilde", was bedeutet, kleiner Bach, Pfütze. Wegen des Lebens in kurzlebigen Gewässern können die Eier der meisten killifish Perioden der partiellen Dehydratation überleben. Viele der Arten beruhen auf einer solchen Diapause, da die Eier nicht mehr als ein paar Wochen überleben würden, wenn sie ganz in Wasser versunken sind. Wie Samen können die Eier per Post ohne Wasser versendet werden. Die Erwachsenen von einigen Arten, wie Kryptolebias marmoratus, können zusätzlich aus dem Wasser für mehrere Wochen überleben. Die meisten Killies sind kleine Fische, von einem bis zwei Zoll, mit der größten Arten, die gerade knapp sechs Zoll wachsen.
