Hydrometer
Ein Hydrometer ist ein Instrument zur Messung der spezifischen Schwerkraft von Flüssigkeiten; Das heißt, das Verhältnis der Dichte der Flüssigkeit zur Dichte des Wassers. Ein Aräometer ist in der Regel aus Glas und besteht aus einem zylindrischen Stamm und eine Glühbirne gewichtet mit Quecksilber oder Blei-Schuss, um es aufrecht zu schweben. Die zu testende Flüssigkeit wird in einen großen Behälter gegossen, oft einen Messzylinder, und der Aräometer wird sanft in die Flüssigkeit abgesenkt, bis er frei schwimmt. Der Punkt, an dem die Oberfläche der Flüssigkeit den Stamm des Hydrometers berührt, ist bekannt. Hydrometer enthalten in der Regel eine Skala im Inneren des Stammes, so dass die spezifische Schwerkraft direkt gelesen werden kann. Es gibt eine Vielzahl von Skalen, die je nach Kontext verwendet werden. Die Aräometer können für verschiedene Verwendungen kalibriert werden, wie z. B. ein Lactometer zur Messung der Milchdichte, ein Saccharometer zur Messung der Dichte von Zucker in einer Flüssigkeit oder ein Alkoholometer zur Messung höherer Alkoholgehalte in Spirituosen.
