Einige ältere Lehrbücher definieren Gitterenergie mit dem entgegengesetzten Vorzeichen, d.h. die Energie, die erforderlich ist, um den Kristall in unendlich getrennte gasförmige Ionen, Atome oder Moleküle im Vakuum umzuwandeln, ein endothermes Verfahren. Nach dieser Konvention würde die Gitterenergie von NaCl +786 kJ / mol betragen. Die Gitterenergie für ionische Kristalle wie Natriumchlorid, Metalle wie Eisen oder kovalent gebundene Materialien wie Diamant ist in der Größenordnung wesentlich größer als bei Feststoffen wie Zucker oder Iod, deren neutrale Moleküle nur durch schwächeren Dipol-Dipol oder Vander wechselwirken Waals Kräfte.
