Antoine Lavoisier
Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier war ein französischer Adliger und Chemiker, der sich in der chemischen Revolution des 18. Jahrhunderts konzentrierte und einen großen Einfluss auf die Geschichte der Chemie und Biologie hatte. Er gilt weithin als der "Vater der modernen Chemie". Es ist allgemein anerkannt, daß Lavoisiers große Errungenschaften in der Chemie weitgehend aus der Tatsache stammen, daß er die Wissenschaft von einer qualitativen zu einer quantitativen veränderte. Lavoisier ist am meisten bekannt für seine Entdeckung der Rolle Sauerstoff spielt in der Verbrennung. Er erkannte und nannte Sauerstoff und Wasserstoff und widersprach der Phlogiston-Theorie. Lavoisier half, das metrische System zu konstruieren, schrieb die erste umfangreiche Liste von Elementen und half, die chemische Nomenklatur zu reformieren. Er prophezeite die Existenz von Silizium und war auch der erste, der festlegte, dass Schwefel eher ein Element als eine Verbindung war. Er entdeckte, dass, obwohl die Materie ihre Form oder Form ändern kann, ihre Masse immer gleich bleibt. Lavoisier war ein Verwalter der Ferme Générale und ein starkes Mitglied einer Reihe anderer aristokratischer Räte. All diese politischen und wirtschaftlichen Aktivitäten ermöglichten ihm, seine wissenschaftliche Forschung zu finanzieren.
