Listeria
Listeria ist eine Gattung von Bakterien, die zehn Arten enthält. Nach dem englischen Pionier der sterilen Chirurgie Joseph Lister benannt, erhielt die Gattung ihren heutigen Namen 1940. Listeria-Arten sind fakultativ anaerobe, Gram-positive Bazillen. Der wichtigste menschliche Pathogen in der Listeria-Gattung ist L. monocytogenes. Es ist in der Regel der Erreger der relativ seltenen bakteriellen Erkrankung, Listeriose, eine schwere Infektion durch den Verzehr von Lebensmitteln mit den Bakterien verunreinigt verursacht. Die Krankheit betrifft vor allem schwangere Frauen, Neugeborene, Erwachsene mit geschwächten Immunsystem und ältere Menschen. Listeriose ist eine ernste Krankheit für den Menschen; Die offene Form der Krankheit hat eine Sterblichkeitsrate von etwa 20 Prozent. Die beiden wichtigsten klinischen Manifestationen sind Sepsis und Meningitis. Meningitis ist oft kompliziert durch Enzephalitis, eine Pathologie, die für bakterielle Infektionen ungewöhnlich ist. Listeria ivanovii ist ein Erreger von Säugetieren, speziell Wiederkäuer, und hat selten eine Listeriose beim Menschen verursacht.
