Der Stein wurde mit einer Mischung aus Säure und Gummi arabicum behandelt, wobei die Teile des Steins geätzt wurden, die nicht durch das fettbasierte Bild geschützt waren. Als der Stein nachträglich angefeuchtet wurde, behielten diese geätzten Gebiete Wasser; Eine Öl-basierte Tinte könnte dann aufgetragen werden und würde durch das Wasser abgestoßen werden, nur an der ursprünglichen Zeichnung kleben. Die Tinte würde schließlich auf ein leeres Papierblatt übertragen, wodurch eine gedruckte Seite erzeugt wird. Diese traditionelle Technik wird noch in einigen Kunstdrucken verwendet. In der modernen Lithographie wird das Bild aus einer Polymerbeschichtung hergestellt, die auf eine flexible Aluminiumplatte aufgebracht wird.
