Lobotomie
Lobotomie ist ein neurochirurgisches Verfahren, eine Form der Psychosurgerie, die auch als Leukotomie oder Leukotomie bekannt ist (aus dem griechischen λευκός Leukos "klar, weiß" Und tome). Es besteht aus dem Schneiden oder Abkratzen der meisten Verbindungen zu und von der präfrontalen Kortex, dem vorderen Teil der frontalen Lappen des Gehirns. Während das Verfahren, das ursprünglich als Leukotomie bezeichnet wurde, seit seiner Gründung im Jahre 1935 umstritten war, war es ein Mainstream-Verfahren für mehr als zwei Jahrzehnte, das für psychiatrische (und gelegentlich andere) Bedingungen vorgeschrieben ist, trotz allgemeiner Anerkennung von häufigen und ernsten Nebenwirkungen. Der Direktor des Verfahrens, António Egas Moniz, teilte den Nobelpreis für Physiologie oder Medizin von 1949 für die "Entdeckung des therapeutischen Wertes der Leukotomie bei bestimmten Psychosen", obwohl die Vergabe des Preises kontrovers war. Die Anwendung des Verfahrens nahm in einigen Ländern von Anfang der 1940er Jahre bis in die 1950er Jahre dramatisch zu. Bis 1951 wurden in den Vereinigten Staaten fast 20.000 Lobotomien durchgeführt.
