Die häufigste Definition ist das Funkband mit Wellenlängen größer als 1000 Meter, was die ITUs Niederfrequenz- und sehr tiefe Frequenzbänder beinhalten würde, aber manchmal ist ein Teil des mittleren Frequenzbandes enthalten. In allen Fällen ist die gesamte LF-Band enthalten. In den USA interessiert sich der Longwave Club of America für "Frequenzen unterhalb des AM Broadcast Band", d.h. alle Frequenzen unter 535 kHz. In Europa, Afrika und großen Teilen Asiens, wo eine Reihe von Frequenzen zwischen 148,5 und 283,5 kHz für AM-Rundfunk verwendet wird, bezieht sich der Begriff Langwelle in der Regel speziell auf diese Rundfunkband.
