Maitland
Maitland ist ein englischer und schottischer Familienname. Es kam in Großbritannien nach der normannischen Eroberung von 1066. Es gibt zwei Theorien über seine Quelle. Es ist entweder ein Spitzname Verweis auf "schlechtes Temperament" (altes Französisch, Maltalent, Anglo Norman Französisch, Mautalent, Latein Malum Talentum), oder es kann ein lokaler Hinweis auf Mautalant, ein Ort in Pontorson, Frankreich sein. Die Bretagne Verbindung ist weniger wahrscheinlich als die mit Les Moitiers d'Allonne, in der Nähe von Carteret im Cotentin. Mautalents leben weiterhin in und in der Nähe von Les Moitiers d'Allonne, und die frühen mittelalterlichen Urkunden verknüpfen die Maltalents von England und Schottland mit der Familie Morville - Ursprung aus Morville, Nr. Valonges, in der Nähe und Roger de Mowbray, dessen Familie aus Aubigny kam, auch in der Nähe. Der Name stieg allmählich nach Mautalent und dann nach Maitland, wobei die letztere Rechtschreibung um 1250 erschien und sich Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts niederließ. Die früheste öffentliche Aufzeichnung des Nachnamens in Großbritannien, nach der Schlachtabtei Rolle von 1066, datiert auf 1138 in Northumberland, als Robert Maltalent eine Charta von Roger de Mowbray in Yorkshire erlebte. Der Clan Maitland ist ein lowland schottischer Clan.
