Mayflies oder Shadflies sind Insekten, die zur Ordnung gehören Ephemeroptera (aus dem Griechischen εφημερος, Ephemeros = "kurzlebig" (wörtlich "Tagestag" "täglich" oder "Tag lang"), πτερον, pteron = "Flügel" Auf die kurze Lebensdauer der Erwachsenen). Sie wurden in eine alte Gruppe von Insekten, die als die Palaeoptera, die auch enthält Libellen und Damselflies. Sie sind aquatische Insekten, deren unreife Bühne (genannt "Naiad" oder umgangssprachlich "Nymphe") in der Regel ein Jahr in Süßwasser dauert. Die Erwachsenen sind kurzlebig, von wenigen Minuten bis zu einigen Tagen, je nach Art. Über 2.500 Arten sind weltweit bekannt, darunter etwa 630 Arten in Nordamerika. Zum Beispiel wurde die Entstehung einer Spezies von Hexagenia auf dem Doppler-Wetterradar entlang der Ufer des Erie-Sees aufgezeichnet. Die meisten Arten fressen Algen oder Diatomeen, aber einige Arten sind räuberisch. Die Naiad-Bühne kann von mehreren Monaten bis zu mehreren Jahren dauern, mit einer Anzahl von Müttern auf dem Weg.
