Membran
Eine Membran ist eine selektive Barriere, die den Durchgang bestimmter Bestandteile erlaubt und andere Bestandteile, die in der Flüssigkeit gefunden werden, behält. Der Zulauf einer Membran ist als Zufuhrstrom bekannt, die Flüssigkeit, die durch die Membran hindurchgeht, ist als Permeat bekannt und die Flüssigkeit, die die zurückgehaltenen Bestandteile enthält, ist das Retentat oder Konzentrat. Der Begriff der Membran ist seit dem achtzehnten Jahrhundert bekannt, wurde aber bis zum Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges wenig außerhalb des Labors verwendet. Die Trinkwasserversorgung in Europa wurde durch den Krieg beeinträchtigt und Membranfilter wurden verwendet, um die Wassersicherheit zu testen. Aufgrund der mangelnden Zuverlässigkeit, des langsamen Betriebs, der reduzierten Selektivität und der erhöhten Kosten wurden die Membranen jedoch nicht weitgehend ausgenutzt. Die erste Verwendung von Membranen in großem Maßstab erfolgte mit Mikrofiltration und Ultrafiltrationstechnologien. Seit den achtziger Jahren sind diese Trennprozesse, zusammen mit der Elektrodialyse, in Großpflanzen beschäftigt und heute gibt es eine Reihe von erfahrenen Firmen, die dem Markt dienen. Der Grad der Selektivität einer Membran hängt von der Membranporengröße ab.
