Felix Mendelssohn
Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, geboren und weithin bekannt als Felix Mendelssohn, war ein deutscher Komponist, Pianist, Organist und Dirigent der frühen Romantik. Ein Enkel des Philosophen Moses Mendelssohn, Felix Mendelssohn, wurde in eine prominente jüdische Familie geboren, obwohl er zunächst ohne Religion aufgewachsen war und später als reformierter Christ getauft wurde. Mendelssohn wurde früh als ein Wunderkind erkannt, aber seine Eltern waren vorsichtig und wollten nicht auf sein Talent kapitalisieren. Mendelssohn genoss in Deutschland einen frühen Erfolg, wo er auch das Interesse an der Musik von Johann Sebastian Bach und seinen Reisen in ganz Europa wiederbelebte. Er wurde in Großbritannien als Komponist, Dirigent und Solist besonders gut aufgenommen, und seine zehn Besuche dort, in denen viele seiner großen Werke uraufgeführt wurden, bilden einen wichtigen Teil seiner erwachsenen Karriere. Sein im Wesentlichen konservativer musikalischer Geschmack setzte ihn jedoch von vielen seiner abenteuerlicheren musikalischen Zeitgenossen wie Franz Liszt, Richard Wagner und Hector Berlioz ab. Das Leipziger Konservatorium, das er gründete, wurde zu einer Bastion dieser anti-radikalen Perspektive.
