Die Mercator-Projektion ist eine zylindrische Kartenprojektion, die von dem flämischen Geographen und Kartographen Gerardus Mercator im Jahre 1569 vorgestellt wurde. Es wurde die Standard-Kartenprojektion für nautische Zwecke wegen seiner Fähigkeit, Linien von konstantem Kurs, bekannt als Hüpflinien oder Loxodrome, als gerade Segmente darzustellen Die die Winkel mit den Meridianen bewahren. Während die lineare Skala in allen Richtungen um jeden Punkt gleich ist und so die Winkel und die Formen von kleinen Objekten bewahrt, verzerrt die Mercator-Projektion die Größe und Form von großen Objekten, da die Skala vom Äquator zu den Polen zunimmt unendlich.

The Mercator projection is a cylindrical map projection presented by the Flemish geographer and cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569. It became the standard map projection for nautical purposes because of its ability to represent lines of constant course, known as rhumb lines or loxodromes, as straight segments which conserve the angles with the meridians. While the linear scale is equal in all directions around any point, thus preserving the angles and the shapes of small objects, the Mercator projection distorts the size and shape of large objects, as the scale increases from the Equator to the poles, where it becomes infinite.
