Ein Mesne-Herr hielt kein Land direkt vom König, das heißt, er war kein Mieter-in-Chef. Sein subinfudated Anwesen wurde als "Mesne Estate" oder Afterlehen im Heiligen Römischen Reich genannt. Er war also ein Zwischen- oder "mittlerer" Mieter, der sich im mittelalterlichen französischen Wort mesne im modernen französischen Moyen widerspiegelt. Obwohl die Mesne-Lords nach der Abschaffung einer weiteren Untereinreichung durch das Statut von Quia Emptores, mit der Zeit und dem Verlust der Rekorde weiterhin bestanden, wurde davon ausgegangen, dass das größte Land direkt von der Krone gehalten wurde. Escheat in Mangel an Erben an Mesne Lords wurde von der Verwaltung der Estates Act 1925 abgeschafft.

A mesne lord was a lord in the feudal system who had vassals who held land from him, but who was himself the vassal of a higher lord. A mesne lord did not hold land directly of the king, that is to say he was not a tenant-in-chief. His subinfeudated estate was called a "mesne estate" or Afterlehen in the Holy Roman Empire. He was thus an intermediate or "middle" tenant, which status is reflected in the mediaeval French word mesne, in modern French moyen. Although mesne lords continued to exist after the abolition of any further subinfeudation by the statute of Quia Emptores, with time and the loss of records, it came to be assumed that most land was held directly of the crown. Escheat in want of heirs to mesne lords was abolished by the Administration of Estates Act 1925.
