MI5
Der Sicherheitsdienst, der gemeinhin als MI5 bekannt ist, ist die inländische Counter-Intelligence- und Security-Agentur des Vereinigten Königreichs und ist Teil seiner Intelligenz-Maschinen neben dem Secret Intelligence Service, der sich auf ausländische Bedrohungen, Government Communications Headquarters und Defense Intelligence konzentriert. Alle kommen unter die Leitung des Joint Intelligence Committee. Der Dienst hat eine gesetzliche Grundlage im Sicherheitsdienstgesetz von 1989 und des Nachrichtendienstgesetzes von 1994. Sein Aufgabenbereich umfasst den Schutz der britischen parlamentarischen Demokratie und der wirtschaftlichen Interessen, des Terrorismus und der Gegenspionage innerhalb des Vereinigten Königreichs. Obwohl es vor allem mit der inneren Sicherheit beschäftigt ist, hat es eine ausländische Rolle bei der Unterstützung ihrer Mission. Innerhalb der Zivildienstgemeinde ist der Dienst umgangssprachlich als Kasten 500 bekannt. Der Dienst hat seit 1995 ein nationales Hauptquartier am Thames House auf der Millbank in London und zieht das Personal aus einer Reihe von Standorten in eine einzige HQ-Anlage zusammen. Thames House wurde bis März 2013 mit dem Nordirland Büro geteilt und ist auch die Heimat der Joint Terrorism Analysis Center, eine untergeordnete Organisation zum Security Service.
