Percy Spencer erfand den ersten Mikrowellenofen nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg aus der Radar-Technologie, die während des Krieges entwickelt wurde. Benannt der "Radarange", wurde es erstmals 1947 verkauft. Raytheon lizenzierte später seine Patente für einen Heimnutzungs-Mikrowellenherd, der erstmals 1955 von Tappan eingeführt wurde, aber diese Einheiten waren noch zu groß und teuer für den allgemeinen Hausgebrauch. Der Countertop-Mikrowellenofen wurde erstmals 1967 von der Amana Corporation eingeführt, die 1965 von Raytheon erworben wurde. Mikrowellen-Öfen sind für die Wiedererwärmung zuvor gekochten Speisen und Kochen Gemüse beliebt.
