Hebamme Kröten sind eine Gattung von Fröschen in der Familie Alytidae, und sind in den meisten von Europa und Nordwestafrika gefunden. Charakteristisch für diese Kröten-Frösche ist ihre elterliche Fürsorge: Die Männchen tragen eine Reihe von befruchteten Eiern auf dem Rücken, daher der Name "Hebamme". Das Weibchen vertreibt einen Strang von Eiern, den der Mann nach außen befruchtet. Er wickelt sie dann um seine Beine, um sie vor Raubtieren im Wasser zu schützen. Wenn sie bereit sind zu schlüpfen, weht das Männchen in flaches Wasser, wo er die Kaulquappen aus ihren Eiern springen lässt. Fünf verschiedene Arten von Hebammen-Kröten finden sich in Westeuropa, Nordafrika und Mallorca. Hebammenkröten finden sich in den Schnee der Pyrenäen, die in Höhen von 5.000-6.500 Fuß in Gebieten wie dem Néouvielle-Massiv leben. Anders als die dünne Zunge vieler Amphibien ist die Zunge der Hebamme rund und abgeflacht; Sein ehemaliger Familienname, Discoglossidae, bedeutet "runde Zunge". In Teilen von Frankreich heiraten Kröten leben in Sanddünen am Meer. Sie teilen diesen Lebensraum mit Natterjack Kröten.
