In der griechischen Mythologie war der Minotaurus ein Geschöpf mit dem Kopf eines Stiers auf dem Körper eines Mannes oder, wie von dem römischen Dichter Ovid beschrieben, "Teilmann und Teilstier". Er wohnte in der Mitte des kretischen Labyrinths, das eine aufwändige Labyrinth-artige Konstruktion war, die von dem Architekten Daedalus und seinem Sohn Ikarus auf Befehl des Königs Minos von Kreta entworfen wurde. Der Minotaurus wurde schließlich vom athenischen Helden Theseus getötet. Der Begriff Minotaurus leitet sich aus dem Altgriechischen Μῑνώταυρος, einer Verbindung des Namens Μίνως und dem Substantiv ταύρος "Stier", übersetzt als "Bull of Minos". Auf Kreta war der Minotaurus mit seinem Eigennamen Asterion bekannt, ein Name, der mit Minos 'Pfleger-Vater geteilt wurde. "Minotaur" war ursprünglich ein Eigenname in Bezug auf diese mythische Figur. Die Verwendung von "Minotaur" als ein allgemeines Substantiv, um sich auf Mitglieder einer generischen Rasse von Stierköpfigen Kreaturen zu beziehen, entwickelte sich viel später in der Fantasy-Genre-Fiktion des 20. Jahrhunderts.
