Mithraische Mysterien
Die Mithraischen Mysterien waren eine Rätselreligion, die im Römischen Reich aus dem 1. bis 4. Jh. N. Chr. Praktiziert wurde. Der Name des persischen Gottes Mithra, der in Griechisch als Mithras angepasst wurde, war mit einer neuen und unverwechselbaren Bildsprache verbunden. Schriftsteller der Römischen Reichsperiode bezog sich auf diese Geheimnisreligion durch Phrasen, die als Mysterien von Mithras oder Mysterien der Perser anglisiert werden können; Moderne Historiker bezeichnen es als Mithraismus oder manchmal römischer Mithraismus. Die Mysterien waren im römischen Militär beliebt. Die Anbetern von Mithras hatten ein komplexes System von sieben Einstufungsstufen, mit rituellen Mahlzeiten. Eingeweihte nannten sich syndexioi, die "vereint durch den Händedruck". Sie trafen sich in unterirdischen Tempeln, die in großer Zahl überleben. Der Kult scheint sein Zentrum in Rom zu haben. Zahlreiche archäologische Funde, darunter Treffpunkte, Denkmäler und Artefakte, haben zum modernen Wissen über Mithraismus im ganzen Römischen Reich beigetragen. Die ikonischen Szenen von Mithras zeigen, dass er aus einem Felsen geboren wird, einen Stier schlachtet und ein Bankett mit dem Gott Sol teilt. Über 420 Standorte haben Materialien, die mit dem Kult zusammenhängen, ergeben.
