Ihr Gebrauch beruht auf der Beobachtung, dass sich der menschliche Geist leichter an räumliche, persönliche, überraschende, physische, sexuelle, humorvolle oder sonst "verwandte" Informationen erinnert, anstatt abstraktere oder unpersönliche Informationsformen. Das Wort mnemonic ist aus dem altgriechischen Wort μνημονικός abgeleitet, was bedeutet "des Gedächtnisses, oder in Bezug auf das Gedächtnis" und bezieht sich auf Mnemosyne, der Name der Göttin der Erinnerung in der griechischen Mythologie. Beide Wörter werden aus μνήμη, "Erinnerung, Gedächtnis" abgeleitet. Mnemonik in der Antike wurden am häufigsten im Zusammenhang mit dem, was heute als die Kunst der Erinnerung bekannt ist.
