Da die Chromosomenzahl in der Regel nur durch den spezialisierten Prozess der Meiose reduziert wird, erben die somatischen Zellen des Körpers und pflegen die Chromosomenzahl der Zygote. Doch in vielen Situationen verdoppeln somatische Zellen ihre Kopienzahl durch endoskopische Vervielfältigung als Aspekt der zellulären Differenzierung.
