Mudstone
Mudstone, eine Art Schlamm, ist ein feinkörniger Sedimentgestein, dessen ursprüngliche Bestandteile Tone oder Schlamm waren. Korngröße ist bis zu 0,0625 mm mit einzelnen Körnern zu klein, um ohne Mikroskop zu unterscheiden. Bei erhöhtem Druck im Laufe der Zeit können die Tafelmineralien mit dem Auftreten von Spaltbarkeit oder Parallelschichten ausgerichtet werden. Dieses fein gebettete Material, das sich leicht in dünne Schichten aufteilt, heißt Schiefer, im Unterschied zu Schlammstein. Der Mangel an Spaltbarkeit oder Schichtung in Schlammstein kann entweder auf die ursprüngliche Textur oder auf die Unterbrechung der Schichtung durch die Graben von Organismen im Sediment vor der Verfestigung zurückzuführen sein. Schlammfelsen wie Schlammstein und Schiefer umfassen etwa 65% aller Sedimentgesteine. Mudstone sieht aus wie gehärteter Ton und je nach den Umständen, unter denen er gebildet wurde, kann es Risse oder Fissuren zeigen, wie eine sonnengebackene Tonablagerung. Sie können in diese Kategorien getrennt werden: ▪ Siltstone - größer als die Hälfte der Komposition ist schlammgroße Partikel. ▪ Tonstein - mehr als die Hälfte der Zusammensetzung ist Tonteilchen. ▪ Mudstone - gehärteter Schlamm; Eine Mischung aus Schlick- und Ton-Partikeln.
