Myelin
Myelin ist ein dielektrisches Material, das eine Schicht bildet, die Myelinscheide, meist nur das Axon eines Neurons. Es ist wichtig für die ordnungsgemäße Funktion des Nervensystems. Es ist ein Auswuchs einer Art Glialzelle. Die Produktion der Myelinscheide heißt Myelinisierung. Bei den Menschen beginnt die Myelinisierung in der 14. Woche der fetalen Entwicklung, obwohl wenig Myelin im Gehirn zum Zeitpunkt der Geburt existiert. Während der Kindheit tritt die Myelinisierung schnell auf und setzt sich durch die jugendlichen Stadien des Lebens fort. Schwann-Zellen liefern das Myelin für periphere Neuronen, während Oligodendrozyten, speziell des interfaszischen Typs, die Axone des Zentralnervensystems myelinisieren. Myelin gilt als ein charakteristisches Merkmal der Wirbeltiere, aber auch myelinähnliche Hüllen sind durch parallele Evolution bei einigen Wirbellosen entstanden, obwohl sie sich von der Wirbeltiermyelin auf molekularer Ebene ganz anders unterscheiden. Myelin wurde 1854 von Rudolf Virchow entdeckt.
