Myriapoda
Myriapoda ist ein Subphylum von Arthropoden, die Tausendfüßler, Tausendfüßler und andere enthalten. Die Gruppe enthält über 13.000 Arten, die alle terrestrisch sind. Obwohl ihr Name vorschlägt, dass sie unzählige Beine haben, reichen Myriapoden von über 750 Beinen bis zu weniger als zehn Beinen. Die fossilen Aufzeichnungen von Myriapoden reichen bis in den späten Silurian zurück, obwohl molekulare Evidenz eine Diversifikation in der Kambrischen Periode nahelegt und kambrische Fossilien existieren, die Myriapoden ähneln. Das älteste unmissverständliche Myriapodenfossil ist vom Tausendfüßler Pneumodesmus Newmani, vom späten Silurianer. P. newmani ist auch als das früheste bekannte terrestrische Tier wichtig. Die phylogenetische Klassifikation von Myriapoden wird noch diskutiert. Das wissenschaftliche Studium der Myriapoden ist die Myriapodologie, und diejenigen, die Myriapoden studieren, sind Myriapodologen.
