Neutronen binden mit Protonen und einander im Kern über die Atomkraft, um sie effektiv zu stabilisieren. Die Anzahl der Neutronen im Kern eines Atoms wird als Neutronenzahl bezeichnet, die das spezifische Isotop dieses Atoms offenbart. Zum Beispiel hat das reichliche Kohlenstoff-12-Isotop 6 Protonen und 6 Neutronen, während das seltene radioaktive Kohlenstoff-14-Isotop auch 6 Protonen, sondern stattdessen 8 Neutronen aufweist.
