Die nictitierende Membran ist ein transparentes oder lichtdurchlässiges drittes Augenlid, das bei einigen Tieren vorhanden ist, die zum Schutz über das Auge gezogen werden können und es befeuchten können, während die Sichtbarkeit beibehalten wird. Einige Reptilien, Vögel und Haie haben volle, nictitierende Membranen; Bei vielen Säugetieren bleibt ein kleiner, räumlicher Teil der Membran in der Ecke des Auges. Einige Säugetiere, wie Kamele, Eisbären, Seehunde und Aardvarks, haben volle nictitierende Membranen. Oft genannt ein drittes Augenlid oder haw, kann es in der wissenschaftlichen Terminologie wie die plica semilunaris, Membrana nictitans oder palpebra tertia bezeichnet werden. Die nictitierende Membran eines blauen Hais Vollständig entwickelte Nictitationsmembranen finden sich bei Fischen, Amphibien, Reptilien, Vögeln und Säugetieren, sind aber bei Primaten selten. Bei den Menschen sind die Plica semilunaris und ihre damit verbundenen Muskeln homolog zu den nictitierenden Membranen, die bei einigen anderen Säugetieren und anderen Wirbeltieren zu sehen sind. In den meisten primaten Spezies ist ein plica semilunaris vorhanden, obwohl voll entwickelte nictitierende Membranen in Lemuren und lorisoiden Primaten gefunden werden können.
