Ein Nomogramm, auch Nomogramm, Ausrichtungsdiagramm oder Abaque genannt, ist ein grafisches Berechnungsgerät, ein zweidimensionales Diagramm, das die ungefähre grafische Berechnung einer Funktion ermöglicht. Das Feld der Nomographie wurde 1884 vom französischen Ingenieur Philbert Maurice d'Ocagne erfunden und seit vielen Jahren intensiv genutzt, um Ingenieuren schnell grafische Berechnungen komplizierter Formeln zu einer praktischen Präzision zu bieten. Nomogramme verwenden ein paralleles Koordinatensystem, das von d'Ocagne erfunden wurde, anstatt herkömmliche kartesische Koordinaten. Ein Nomogramm besteht aus einem Satz von n Skalen, einer für jede Variable in einer Gleichung. Wenn man die Werte von n-1-Variablen kennt, kann man den Wert der unbekannten Variablen finden oder durch die Festsetzung der Werte einiger Variablen die Beziehung zwischen den Unfixierten untersucht werden. Das Ergebnis wird erhalten, indem man eine Strecke über die bekannten Werte auf den Skalen legt und den unbekannten Wert liest, von wo aus sie die Skala für diese Variable kreuzt. Die virtuelle oder gezeichnete Linie, die durch das Straightge erstellt wird, wird als Indexlinie oder Isoplethen bezeichnet.

A nomogram, also called a nomograph, alignment chart or abaque, is a graphical calculating device, a two-dimensional diagram designed to allow the approximate graphical computation of a function. The field of nomography was invented in 1884 by the French engineer Philbert Maurice d’Ocagne and used extensively for many years to provide engineers with fast graphical calculations of complicated formulas to a practical precision. Nomograms use a parallel coordinate system invented by d'Ocagne rather than standard Cartesian coordinates. A nomogram consists of a set of n scales, one for each variable in an equation. Knowing the values of n-1 variables, the value of the unknown variable can be found, or by fixing the values of some variables, the relationship between the unfixed ones can be studied. The result is obtained by laying a straightedge across the known values on the scales and reading the unknown value from where it crosses the scale for that variable. The virtual or drawn line created by the straightedge is called an index line or isopleth.
