Nichtcodierende DNA
In der Genomik und verwandten Disziplinen sind nichtkodierende DNA-Sequenzen Bestandteile der DNA eines Organismus, die keine Proteinsequenzen codieren. Einige nicht-kodierende DNA wird in funktionelle nicht-kodierende RNA-Moleküle transkribiert, während andere nicht transkribiert werden oder RNA-Transkripte unbekannter Funktion hervorrufen. Die Menge an nicht-kodierender DNA variiert stark unter den Spezies. Zum Beispiel sind über 98% des menschlichen Genoms nicht-kodierende DNA, während nur etwa 2% eines typischen bakteriellen Genoms nicht kodierende DNA sind. Zunächst hatte ein großer Teil der nicht-kodierenden DNA keine bekannte biologische Funktion und wurde daher manchmal auch als "Junk-DNA" bezeichnet, insbesondere in der Laienpresse. Es ist jedoch seit Jahrzehnten bekannt, dass viele nichtkodierende Sequenzen funktionell sind. Dazu gehören Gene für funktionelle RNA-Moleküle und Sequenzen wie Replikationsursprünge, Zentromer und Telomere. Einige Sequenzen können keine biologische Funktion für den Organismus haben, wie endogene Retroviren.
