Innovation geht es darum, einen besseren Weg zu finden, etwas zu tun. Eine Definition, die mit diesen Aspekten übereinstimmt, wäre folgendes: "Eine Innovation ist etwas Ursprüngliches, Neues und Wichtiges in jedem Bereich, der in einen Markt oder eine Gesellschaft einbricht". Während etwas Romanes oft als eine Innovation, in der Ökonomie, in der Managementwissenschaft und in anderen Bereichen der Praxis und Analyse beschrieben wird, wird es allgemein als ein Prozess betrachtet, der verschiedene neuartige Ideen in einer Weise zusammenbringt, die sie einen Einfluss auf die Gesellschaft haben. Innovation unterscheidet sich von der Erfindung dadurch, dass Innovation sich auf die Verwendung einer besseren und damit neuartigen Idee oder Methode bezieht, während die Erfindung sich direkt auf die Erstellung der Idee oder Methode selbst bezieht.
