Gelegentlicher ist eine philosophische Theorie über die Kausalität, die besagt, dass die erzeugten Substanzen keine effizienten Ursachen von Ereignissen darstellen können. Stattdessen werden alle Ereignisse direkt von Gott verursacht. Die Theorie besagt, dass die Illusion der effizienten Verursachung zwischen weltlichen Ereignissen aus Gottes Verursachung eines Ereignisses nach dem anderen entsteht. Allerdings gibt es keine notwendige Verbindung zwischen den beiden: Es ist nicht, dass das erste Ereignis dazu führt, dass Gott das zweite Ereignis verursacht: Vielmehr verursacht Gott zuerst einen und verursacht dann den anderen.

Occasionalism is a philosophical theory about causation which says that created substances cannot be efficient causes of events. Instead, all events are taken to be caused directly by God. The theory states that the illusion of efficient causation between mundane events arises out of God's causing of one event after another. However, there is no necessary connection between the two: it is not that the first event causes God to cause the second event: rather, God first causes one and then causes the other.
