Oceanus
Oceanus (/ oʊsiːənəs /; Altgriechisch: Ὠκεανός (Okeanos); ausgesprochen) war ein pseudo-geographische Merkmal in der Antike glaubte von den alten Griechen und Römer die göttliche Personifikation des World Ocean, einem riesigen Fluss rings um die Welt. Streng genommen war Oceanus der Ozean-Stream am Äquator, in dem die bewohnbare Hemisphäre (οἰκουμένη, oikoumene) schwebte. In der griechischen Mythologie wurde dieser Weltmeer als Titan, ein Sohn von Uranus und Gaea, personifiziert. In der hellenistischen und römischen Mosaiken, wurde dieser Titan oft mit dem Oberkörper eines muskulösen Mannes dargestellt mit einem langen Bart und Hörnern (oft als die Klauen einer Krabbe dargestellt) und dem unteren Körper einer Schlange (vgl Typhon). Auf einem Teil-archaisches Schiff von circa 580 BC (British Museum 1.971,11-1,1), unter den Göttern bei der Hochzeit von Peleus und der Meeresnymphe Thetis ankommen, ist ein Fischschwanz Oceanus, mit einem Fisch in einer Hand und eine Schlange in Das andere, Geschenke von Prämie und Prophezeiung. In römischen Mosaiken, wie die von Bardo, könnte er ein Lenk-Ruder und eine Wiege ein Schiff tragen.
