Die Zahl der Ommatidien im Auge hängt von der Art des Insekts ab und reicht von nur einer Handvoll in der primitiven Archaeognatha und Thysanura bis etwa 30 Tausend in größeren Anisoptera Libellen und in einigen Sphingidae Motten. Ommatidien sind typischerweise sechseckig im Querschnitt und etwa zehnmal länger als breit. Der Durchmesser ist an der Oberfläche am größten und verjüngt sich zum inneren Ende. An der äußeren Oberfläche befindet sich eine Hornhaut, unterhalb dessen ein Pseudocon ist, der das Licht weiter fokussiert. Die Hornhaut und Pseudocon bilden die äußeren zehn Prozent der Länge des Ommatidiums.
