Onkogen
Ein Onkogen ist ein Gen, das das Potenzial hat, Krebs zu verursachen. In Tumorzellen werden sie oft mutiert oder auf hohem Niveau exprimiert. Die meisten normalen Zellen unterliegen einer programmierten Form des Todes. Aktivierte Onkogene können dazu führen, dass die Zellen, die für die Apoptose bestimmt sind, stattdessen überleben und sich vermehren. Die meisten Onkogene erfordern einen zusätzlichen Schritt, wie Mutationen in einem anderen Gen oder Umweltfaktoren wie Virusinfektionen, um Krebs zu verursachen. Seit den 1970er Jahren wurden Dutzende von Onkogenen bei menschlichem Krebs identifiziert. Viele Krebsmedikamente zielen auf die durch Onkogene kodierten Proteine.
