Organum
Organum ist im Allgemeinen eine schlichte Melodie mit mindestens einer hinzugefügten Stimme, um die im Mittelalter entwickelte Harmonie zu verstärken. Abhängig von der Art und Form des Gesanges kann eine tragende Basslinie auf denselben Text gesungen werden, die Melodie kann in Parallelbewegung verfolgt werden, oder es kann eine Kombination dieser beiden Techniken verwendet werden. Da keine wirklich unabhängige zweite Stimme existiert, ist dies eine Form von Heterophonie. In ihren frühesten Stadien beteiligte sich das Orgel an zwei musikalischen Stimmen: eine gregorianische Gesangmelodie und dieselbe Melodie, die durch ein Konsonantenintervall umgesetzt wurde, meist ein vollkommenes Fünftel oder Viertes. In diesen Fällen begann die Komposition oft und endete auf einem Unisono, die hinzugefügte Stimme, die bis zum ersten Ton stand, bis der erste Teil ein Fünftel oder ein Viertel erreicht hat, von wo aus beide Stimmen in paralleler Harmonie gegangen sind, mit dem umgekehrten Prozess am Ende. Organum wurde ursprünglich improvisiert; Während ein Sänger eine notierte Melodie spielte, ein anderer Sänger-Singen "durch Ohr" - die unbemerkte zweite Melodie. Im Laufe der Zeit begannen die Komponisten, zusätzliche Teile zu schreiben, die nicht nur einfache Transpositionen waren und so eine echte Polyphonie schaffen.
