Orkney
Orkney, auch bekannt als die Orkney-Inseln, ist ein Archipel im Norden Schottlands, 16 Kilometer nördlich der Küste von Caithness. Orkney umfasst etwa 70 Inseln, von denen 20 bewohnt sind. Die größte Insel, bekannt als das "Festland" hat eine Fläche von 523,25 Quadratkilometern und ist damit die sechstgrößte schottische Insel und die zehnte größte Insel auf den britischen Inseln. Das größte Siedlungs- und Verwaltungszentrum ist Kirkwall. Der Name "Orkney" stammt aus dem 1. Jh. V. Chr. Oder früher, und die Inseln sind seit mindestens 8.500 Jahren bewohnt. Ursprünglich von mesolithischen und neolithischen Stämmen besetzt, und dann von den Pikten, wurde Orkney von Norwegen im Jahre 875 eingedrungen und gewaltsam annektiert und von den Norden besiedelt. Das schottische Parlament rekonstruierte dann das Schloß der schottischen Krone im Jahre 1472 nach der gescheiterten Bezahlung einer Mitgift für James IIIs Braut, Margaret von Dänemark. Orkney enthält einige der ältesten und am besten erhaltenen neolithischen Stätten in Europa und das "Herz des neolithischen Orkney" ist ein UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe.
