Otranto
Otranto ist eine Stadt und Gemeinde in der Provinz Lecce, in einer fruchtbaren Region, die einst für ihre Pferdepferde berühmt ist. Es liegt an der Ostküste der Halbinsel Salento. Die Straße von Otranto, zu der die Stadt ihren Namen gibt, verbindet die Adria mit dem Ionischen Meer und trennt Italien von Albanien. Der Hafen ist klein und hat wenig Handel. Der Leuchtturm Faro della Palascìa, etwa 5 Kilometer südöstlich von Otranto, markiert den östlichsten Punkt des italienischen Festlandes. Etwa 50 Kilometer südlich liegt das Vorgebirge von Santa Maria di Leuca, das südöstliche Ende Italiens, das antike Promontorium lapygium oder Sallentinum. Der Bezirk zwischen diesem Vorgebirge und Otranto ist dicht besiedelt und sehr fruchtbar.
