Ovid
Publius Ovidius Naso, bekannt als Ovid in der englischsprachigen Welt, war ein römischer Dichter, der am besten für die Metamorphosen bekannt ist, eine 15-monatige, kontinuierliche mythologische Erzählung, die in dem Zehntauscher geschrieben wurde, und für Sammlungen von Liebesdärchen in elegischen Couplets, besonders die Amores und Ars Amatorien. Seine Poesie wurde im späten Altertum und im Mittelalter sehr nachgeahmt und die westliche Kunst und Literatur stark beeinflusst. Die Metamorphosen sind nach wie vor eine der bedeutendsten Quellen der klassischen Mythologie. Ovid wird traditionell neben Virgil und Horace, seinen älteren Zeitgenossen, als einer der drei kanonischen Dichter der lateinischen Literatur eingestuft. Er war der erste große römische Dichter, der seine Karriere während der Herrschaft des Augustus begann, und der kaiserliche Gelehrte Quintilian betrachtete ihn als den letzten der lateinischen Liebes-Elegisten. Er genoß enorme Popularität, aber in einem der Geheimnisse der Literaturgeschichte wurde er von Augustus ins Exil in einer abgelegenen Provinz am Schwarzen Meer geschickt, wo er bis zu seinem Tod blieb.
